CONFESSIONS OF A D.T. SUZUKI RESEARCHER

Wednesday, September 14, 2011 1:00 – 3:30 pm

Jodo Shinshu Center
2140 Durant Avenue, Berkeley, California 94704

Reflecting on his life as a D. T. Suzuki researcher, Rev. Yokoyama describes the high point of his career: his discovery of the missing pages to D.T. Suzuki’s Introduction to the Kyogyoshinsho that someone had literally hid in the attic of the D. T. Suzuki Library. ‘It was as if the head of the manuscript was in the file downstairs, while the rest of the body was hidden upstairs.” This is the ‘skeleton’ that he found in the attic. Aspects of D. T. Suzuki’s Zen life in relation to Shin Buddhist studies will also be shared, presenting evidence of a new Buddhist paradigm emerging in today’s world.
